A native of South Korea, Areum is a graduate student in the School of Music at Ball State University, USA, where she studies with Dr. Robert Palmer. She is pursuing an Artist Diploma in piano and she is on full assistantship. Areum holds the Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at Michigan State University and the Bachelor of Music degree in Piano at Ewha University in Seoul, South Korea.
Areum began piano lessons in South Korea when she was six years old. After one year of study she won the Gold Award in a piano competition. While a student at the Kaywon High School of Arts in 2001, she was awarded the third place prize in ‘The Two Pianos Four Hands Division’ of 'The 6th Korea Piano Duo Competition', first place in ‘The 7th Korea Piano Duo Competition', and third place in the 'The 6th Kaywon High School of Arts Chamber Music Competition'. Also, she won first place for 'The 24th Music Education News Solo Piano Competition,’ and third place in ‘The 6th Hyupsung University Music Competition’ for solo pianists.
After entering the College of Music at Ewha Womans University in 2004, she studied with Dr. Yoonmi Ham as a piano performance major and psychology as a minor. A devoted teacher, she has traveled to Canada to teach music to Native Americans several times during the summer, and she has visited Mongolia to teach piano to students there.
